"The Dream of Home Courts" - The Story of the Morgan County Tennis Association

Here is the story of a community that is coming together as a real team in their hopes of building a home tennis facility, something they have never had before.

"Berkeley Springs High School – has NEVER held a home tennis match, even though they have had a tennis program since 2004. Why? Because there is no home tennis court facility for the team to effectively practice or play matches. Actually, there isn’t one regulation-size tennis court in playable condition in all of Morgan County, WV.

Still, we have built very successful youth and high school tennis programs using two undersized courts that are often in poor condition. In fact, our youth programs led by Paula Osborne were at capacity all year long, and under the direction of Berkeley Springs Head Coach Raynette Mock, the high school boys and girls teams both won their sectionals this year. The teams sent eight players through the regionals and on to the State Tournament. These kids deserve home courts! The youth in Morgan County, just as other counties in WV, struggle with poverty, broken families, poor health/obesity, drug and substance abuse, and the like, so the MCTA offers programs and activities where youth can have fun and participate in healthy activities in a safe environment while learning tennis skills which can be used their entire lives—as well as learning teamwork and sportsmanship. In order for Berkeley Springs to host tennis matches, the school needs four regulation-size courts in playable condition. This September, the Morgan County Board of Education unanimously approved a location for new tennis courts between Warm Springs Middle School and Warm Springs Intermediate School. However, the Morgan County Tennis Association (MCTA) has been tasked with raising the needed funds to build the courts. The MCTA hopes to build the four-court tennis facility by spring 2020. The estimated total cost is about $200,000. It’s an ambitious mission, and although the MCTA is a small organization, we have already secured $50,000 towards the goal from public and private funds!

We are seeking funds from multiple sources, including grants, public and private entities, local businesses, and individuals, especially those in the tennis community. Of course, all donors and contributors will be recognized as part of the project. Larger donations will be recognized more prominently and advertising opportunities will also be available.

We hope that you will consider joining our team and contribute! All contributors will be recognized. "
